Tales of Tolan, Dev Hell #1

Hello, if you're reading this, well, thank you! This is my 1st dev log for Tales of Tolan: All Tangled Up!

I'd like to start off by introducing myself, I'm David, the lead dev of RBD Interactive. I usually upload my more polished projects on this itch account, and they are all horror themed. Tales of Tolan is not a horror game, as I would like to broaden my projects a bit. Instead, it's a game that is focused on a narrative revolving around Aztec culture. Yah, they were probably scary and would make a great horror game, but my goal here is more fantasy driven.

Working alongside me is Ariana, a talented composer who has helped me brainstorm this game idea. She was the one who mainly came up with the story, and I structured it into a playable format. The story, without spoiling too much, is of an Aztec deity who got all tangled up and left behind. You play as an archeologist from Grence, who lost their father in a war. The last thing he told you before his death was to keep a mysterious map safe, as it was passed down to him from his grandfather. Since your family is a line of archeologists, that map must have something important, so you venture out with your brother to discover what it leads to.

How did we come up with this story? A few years ago, Ariana composed a concept album titled All Tangled Up. One of the songs was about an Aztec deity, and then she went on to create a D&D campaign based off that album. In her campaign, she created the world of Tolan, a place inspired primarily by Aztec culture. Thus, bringing us here to the game Tales of Tolan: All Tangled Up.

Have a listen to the track!

Now that I gave a brief summary of our game, I would like to show you two systems I have ironed out so far that will be included in the gameplay.

Narrative:

You will be able to interact with NPCs using a branching dialogue system. I want it to stay simple, so we will only have two dialogue options. When you select a response, the NPC will reveal their response, just like some old school RPG text-based games have done. Each NPC will also sound unique, using instruments to make it feel like they are talking and emoting. This was inspired by Vintage Story.

Inventory:

The inventory system was inspired by The Forest. My goal is to keep the gameplay simple, and I liked how they handled their inventory. You can pick up items with [E] and then use [Tab] to pop up your inventory, where the objects are all 3D. Here, you can read descriptions about them and equip them. I tried to make it feel like a small pocket dimension. You will be able to hold each item, and they will have their own special uses.

Till next time:

Thats all I have to show for now, I got to get back to Dev Hell! Any comments/feedback are appreciated. If you're interested in more, and would like to be notified here are my links to the following:
